Frequently Asked Questions
This is a difficult and physically demanding trek. Unlike the standard EBC route, this itinerary requires crossing the steep, icy Cho La Pass (5,428m) and navigating the Ngozumpa Glacier. You must have excellent cardiovascular fitness and preferably prior experience trekking above 4,000 meters.
Both offer legendary views, but they are different! Kala Patthar gives you the ultimate, closest view of Mt. Everest and the Khumbu Icefall. Gokyo Ri is situated further back, providing a wider, breathtaking panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, with the beautiful Gokyo Lakes right below you.
Depending on the season and recent snowfall, the Cho La Pass can be icy and slippery. While heavy mountaineering gear isn't required, micro-spikes or crampons are often highly recommended or necessary for safe passage. Our guides will assess the trail conditions and assist you.
Because you will be sleeping above 4,000m and 5,000m for several days, acclimatization is crucial. Our itinerary includes built-in rest days (like in Namche Bazaar) to help your body adapt. Our guides carry first-aid and oximeters. If severe AMS occurs, we will coordinate an immediate descent or helicopter evacuation (ensure your insurance covers this).
The local NCell network works in many parts of the lower Khumbu region, but expect the signal to drop or become highly unreliable once you pass Dingboche and head into the Gokyo valley. Most teahouses offer Wi-Fi access for an additional daily fee (usually $3 - $5).
