Pin Bhaba Pass Trek: India’s Most Dramatic Crossover Expedition
Let’s discover the most dramatic crossover trek in India!
If you want to physically walk through two completely contrasting worlds, the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is your ultimate calling. This historic shepherd’s trail transforms miraculously day by day. You begin in the vibrant, alive, and lush green Bhaba Valley in the Kinnaur region of Himachal Pradesh, and cross over into the galactic, resilient, and pink-hued cold desert of the Pin Valley in Spiti.
Often compared to the Pin Parvati Pass, the Pin Bhaba Pass is slightly more relaxed but equally—if not more—visually dramatic. From the enchanting, storybook-like coniferous forests of Mulling to the Kashmir-like meadows of Karah and the rare river deltas of Phutsirang, every campsite is a masterpiece.
Whether you are walking through rock strata dating back to the Tethys Sea or witnessing the cultural shift from Kinnauri traditions to pure Tibetan culture in Mudh, this trek is a visual and geographical treat for seasoned trekkers.
Overview
How To Reach the Base (Shimla)
Pick-Up Point: Shimla (9:00 AM) | Drop Point: Kaza (6:00 PM - 7:00 PM)
- Via Air: The nearest major airport is in Chandigarh (120 km from Shimla, approx. 4 hours). Jubbarhatti Airport in Shimla has very limited and expensive flights.
- Via Train: Take the Kalka Mail to Kalka Railway Station. From Kalka, you can book the scenic Toy Train to Shimla or hire a cab.
- Via Road: Shimla is well-connected by overnight Volvos and cabs from Delhi (350 km / 10 hours) and Chandigarh (120 km / 4 hours).
Connectivity Note: Mobile networks (Airtel, Vodafone, BSNL) work in Shimla. At Kafnu, only Airtel 4G is available. After Kafnu, there is zero network until you reach Kaza (where internet is highly unreliable). Please make important calls before leaving base camp.

Itinerary
-
Your journey begins from Chandigarh as you drive to Kafnu (2,400 m), the gateway to the Bhabha Pass Trek. Covering approximately 330 km in 10–11 hours, the scenic drive passes through Shimla, Rampur, and the beautiful Kinnaur Valley, following the Sutlej River for much of the route. As you cross Wangtoo, the majestic Kinnaur ranges begin to unfold, offering breathtaking mountain views. Upon reaching Kafnu in the evening, check in to your homestay, enjoy a warm dinner, and rest for the night before the trek begins.

From Day 2, finally our trek begins from Kafnu (2400 meters) to Mulling (3200 meters). The total distance travelled today is 11 km and will take around 8 to 9 hours to reach. After having an early breakfast, we will start our trek amidst apple orchards, the chirping of the Himalayan birds, and the gurgling sound of the turquoise Bhaba river. Since there will be an altitude gain of 900 meters, there will be some steep climbs and you will even see old snow beside the river. There will be several river crossings where wooden bridges are built. By 12pm, we will finally enter the dense Mulling forest which is completely covered with pine, oak, and silver birch trees. After walking through the forest for around 2.5 hours, we will reach vast open lush green meadows. We expect to reach our first campsite in Mulling by 3 pm. After pitching our tents, warm up your body with some hot tea and soups. Night stay at Mulling.
-
On our 3rd day, we will start our trek from Mulling (3200 meters) to Kara (3560 meters). Today the distance is not very long, only 6 km, and will take around 5 hours to reach our campsite. After early breakfast, we start our trek. The trail is considered to be comparatively easy as compared to other days. There is a river crossing which is a challenge and with teamwork, it needs to be done. The best part of today’s trail are the lush green meadows, the Kara river, and our campsite in Kara is the most beautiful campsite you will ever come across. There are beautiful wild flowers in the shades of yellow and purple scattered all over the meadows. There is a gradual uphill climb to reach the campsite at around 2.30 pm. Pitch your tents and wash your feet in the glacial water. Night stay at Kara.
-
On our 4th day, we will start our trek from Kara (3560 meters) to Phutsirang (4100 meters). Though the distance is not much and only 5 km, today is a bit difficult as it involves steeper climbing and several river crossings. We need to cross 6 streams and rocky mountains will surround us throughout the trail which is a beautiful sight to behold. At sometime, there will also be glacial walking which need to be done very cautiously and with the utmost balance. On the other side of the glaciers, we can see the meadows which we have crossed and is indeed a beautiful sight to admire the frenzy of colourful wildflowers scattered all through the meadows in such a cold climate. In case of heavy snow, we pitch our tents at Lower Phustirang and in case of less snow, we pitch our tents at Upper Phutsirang . It is here in Phutsirang, where you will get the glimpse of three beautiful Himalayan mountain passes – the Nimish Kango Pass, Tari Khango Pass, and the Pin Bhaba Pass. Today we will have an early dinner by 6.30pm and sleep early as the next day, we will start at 3 am.
-
Today is the most difficult day of the entire trek as we will trek from Phutsirang (4100 meters) to Bwaldar (3950 meters) via Bhaba Pass (4865 meters). The distance covered is 13 km and will take around 13 hours. The trail today is the most challenging as there is midnight climbing through knee-deep snow, very steep climbing, wearing microspikes, and finally crossing the pass to another dimension of the landscape. After a light breakfast, we start at 3 am. The temperature will be freezing cold and need to use head torch. Each and every trekker will maintain a sequence and make sure to carry sufficient water. The uphill climb will be around 6 hours which involves glacial crossing, morrains, rockfalls, scree, and walking through rough boulders. Sunrise today will be the most beautiful sight at the crack of the dawn. When the first ray of the sun falls on the snow-clad mountain tops, is a moment to cherish forever. And with this you witness the breathtaking panoramic view of the Kinnaur, Spiti, and the Janglik ranges. Once the rocky area end, the white snowfield starts where we need put on our microspikes and gaiters. The view from the Pass, which is the highest point in the trek is the most beautiful one with a 360° view. It is from here you go from the lush green Bhaba Valley in Kinnaur to the dry and resilient Pin Valley in Spiti. When you finally enter the cold desert post lunch, is another sight to behold. Take a rest at Bwaldar campsite.

After having an early breakfast, we start our trek from Boldar (3950 meters) to Mudh (3800 meters) and then from Mudh, we will drive to Kaza (3650 meters). Today is the last day of the trek so make sure you make the most of it. Today is a long 15 km long stretch walk but the terrain is not much difficult and most straight. The most significant part of today’s trek is that there will be a distinct change of colours in the landscape from lush green meadows to brownish pink which is marvellous to witness. There is a river crossing using the log bridge and from there you will be able to see the Mudh village which is another 5 km. now let me mention, this view from this spot is absolutely postcard worthy and undoubtedly a spot-on beauty. From here there is another long swinging 30 meters long bridge over the Spiti river that is hanging between two mountains is sure to make you alive once again. After that there is a difficult steep climb for almost 20 minutes to Mudh village. Finally, you are back to civilization to a village completely alive to mountain cafes and homestays. We expect to reach Mudh by 3.30 pm and you can enjoy some refreshments and from Mudh, we will drive to the mighty Kaza in another two hours. We will stay at Kaza today.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is graded as moderate to difficult. It involves steep ascents, navigating tricky river crossings, walking over moraines, and a massive pass crossing day (13 km/12 hours) at an altitude of 16,105 ft. It requires excellent cardiovascular fitness and stamina.
No, this trek is not recommended for absolute beginners. Because it is a high-altitude crossover trek involving challenging terrains and long walking days, trekkers are highly advised to have prior experience completing at least one or two high-altitude Himalayan treks before attempting Pin Bhaba.
The most ideal time to do this trek is in August and September. During these months, the snow has mostly melted from the trail, making the pass crossing safer. While July is also possible, doing this trek in June is not recommended due to heavy, impassable snow near the rain-shadow areas of the pass.
Both are spectacular, high-altitude crossover treks ending in the Spiti Valley. However, Pin Bhaba Pass is considered slightly more relaxed and less treacherous than Pin Parvati Pass. Pin Bhaba offers an incredibly dramatic transition from the lush green Bhaba Valley to the pink cold desert of Spiti, making it a favorite for those seeking visual diversity without extreme technical difficulty.
During August and September, the daytime temperatures are pleasant and ideal for trekking, ranging between 16°C and 18°C. However, as soon as the sun goes down, temperatures drop drastically, typically hovering between 0°C and -2°C at night.
It is famously known as India's most dramatic crossover trek. In just a few days, trekkers walk through the deep, coniferous forests of Mulling, the Kashmir-like green meadows of Karah, the rare river deltas of Phutsirang, and finally cross over into the completely barren, pink-hued cold desert of the Pin Valley.
