Goecha la Trek โ A Trek with a Plate Full of Mountains! ๐๏ธ
Imagine standing deep inside the Himalayas, surrounded by one magnificent snow-capped peak after another. That’s the magic of the Goechala Trekโan adventure where the mountains aren’t just part of the scenery; they become the entire experience.
For trekking enthusiasts, Goechala is a true bucket-list adventure. The trail brings you remarkably close to the mighty Kanchenjunga range and Mt. Pandim, offering an unforgettable perspective of some of Sikkim’s most spectacular Himalayan giants. ๐๏ธ Fourteen Himalayan Peaks in One Panorama, The biggest attraction of Goechala is undoubtedly its incredible mountain views.
The trek is renowned for offering views of 14 snow-capped Himalayan peaks, making it a dream destination for mountain lovers and landscape photographers. And when you finally get close to the Kanchenjunga range and Mt. Pandim, their immense scale can leave you completely speechless. It’s one thing to see a Himalayan giant from afar. It’s another to stand almost at its doorstep.
Camping Beneath Mt. Pandim
One of the most unforgettable experiences on this trek is camping near the foot of Mt. Pandim. Imagine ending a long day of trekking, sitting beside a warm bonfire, looking up at the enormous Himalayan peaks surrounding your campsite. For a true mountain lover, it doesn’t get much better than this. When the Mountains Turn Golden, Goechala isn’t only about dramatic mountain views. The changing colours of the Himalayas make the journey even more magical. Sunrise and sunset bring the famous alpenglow, transforming the snow-covered peaks into shades of gold and orange. Standing among these enormous mountains as they catch the first or last light of the day is the kind of moment that photographs can never fully capture.
Through the Wild Heart of Kanchenjunga,ย The journey begins from Yuksom in West Sikkim and takes you deep into the Kanchenjunga National Park.
Along the trail, you’ll encounter:
- ๐บ Rhododendron forests blooming during MarchโApril
- ๐ Long suspension bridges
- ๐๏ธ Samiti Lake, with its mirror-like waters
- ๐ A tranquil monastery at around 3,000 m
- ๐๏ธ High-altitude campsites
- ๐๏ธ Spectacular Himalayan viewpoints
Every section of the trail brings a different landscape, making the trek feel like a continuous journey through a Himalayan fairytale.
The Magic of Samiti Lake, Among the many highlights of the route, Samiti Lake deserves a special mention. Its calm, mirror-like waters surrounded by towering mountains create an almost surreal atmosphere. It’s one of those places where you naturally stop walking, take a breath and simply let the Himalayas speak for themselves.
Starting from Historic Yuksom, The adventure begins at Yuksom, a charming Himalayan village in West Sikkim and the former capital of the region before Gangtok. Before the actual trek begins, Yuksom gives you an opportunity to experience the traditional Himalayan lifestyle and local culture of Sikkim. From there, the trail gradually takes you deeper into the wilderness.

On our 2nd day, our starts finally. Today we will trek from Yuksom (1720 m) to Bakhim (2196 m). The total distance travelled is 8 km which will take around 8 hours to reach. We start early after breakfast and cross 3 suspension bridges and the famous Tshushay Khola waterfalls. The trail to the 2nd suspension bridge is quite moderate and easy to walk. Tshushay Khola Waterfalls is a series of mini waterfalls that is very beautiful and after that we have to cross Mentogang Khola and reach Sachen. From Sachen, we will hike towards the forest areas to reach our todayโs campsite, Bakhim. Once we cross the Prek Chu river, there is a 70 degree ascent to reach Bakhim. Today we will have our packed lunch on the way. Bakhim is extremely beautiful with blooming magnolias and rhododendrons during the spring season. Night stay at Bakhim.
-
On our 3rd day, we have a long trek from Bakhim (2196 m) to Dzongri (3970 m). The total distance covered is 12 km which will approximately take 7 to 8 hours to reach. We will continue to trek through pine and rhododendron forests to reach Tshoka which is a beautiful little Himalayan hamlet of the Bhutias. Once we cross Tshoka, we will trek towards the north again through the rhododendron forest and will reach Phedang. We will rest here for a while and will have our packed lunch. Our next point is Deorali which has a steep ascent and is an excellent viewpoint of Mt Kanchenjunga, Kabru and Mt Pandim. From Deorali, there is a gradual ascent to reach Dzongri โ our todayโs campsite. Dzongri offers magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga and Pandim that I am sure one has never seen before. Night stay at Dzongri. Today has been a stressful day as there is significant altitude gain through the trail. Dzongri will be very cold at night so make sure you are well protected.
-
On our 4th day, today we will trek from Dzongri (3970 m) to Thansing (3704 m) via Kokchurang. But first do not forget to miss the sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range that is surrounded all over the Dzongri campsite. We will witness the most amazing sunrise from Dzongri top, which is an early morning hike from the campsite. The golden shaded morning from the top will be etched in your heart forever. I can guarantee that the Dzongri campsite will be one of the most beautiful campsites of your life for sure. The distance travelled today is 10 km it will take 7 hours to reach Thansing. Today the trail is moderate as Thansing is at a lower altitude by the Prek Chu river. We will take a break at Kokchurang and from there will trek to Thansing. The trail through Kokcurang is amidst deep pine forest, where sunlight hardly reaches. The Thansing campsite is located exactly at the foot of Mt Pandim and so you can understand how beautiful the campsite will be. Night stay at Thansing.

From Lamuney, within 30 minutes of steep climb lies the Samiti Lake which is another USP of the Goechala trek. Samiti Lake is renowned for its crystal clear still water and spectacular views of Mt Pandim through the reflection of the water. If you are lucky, you can get a glimpse of deer who come to drink water from the lake. Since camping is not allowed by the lake, you need to return back to Lamuney. Night stay at Lamuney.
-
Finally comes the most important day of our trek. Today we will trek to the Goechala View Point 1 (4602 m) from Lamuney (4145 m) and will return to Kokchurang (3658 m). We will keep our stuffs at Lamuney and leave at 3am for View Point 1 so that we will reach the spot by the sunrise. Trust me it will be the sight of a lifetime when sunโs rays falls on Kanchenjunga making it look like painted in molten gold. The alpenglow over the mountain range should not be missed. It is mandatory to carry a head torch as we ascend towards View Point 1 in the dark. This morning you are as near as you can be to Kanchenjunga without climbing it and the view in front of you is metaphorically beautiful in all sense. Nothing can compare its beauty when the sunโs rays fall on the snow-capped mountains. Along with the Kanchenjunga, you will get to see 14 other snow-capped mountains including Mt Pandim. The only thing I can guarantee you that with this view you will remain speechless for quite a while and will undoubtedly have the best experience of the Goechala Trek. The trail involves steep, rocky ascents (especially towards Dzongri), long daily walking hours, and freezing temperatures. It demands excellent cardiovascular stamina and leg strength.
No, beginners should not attempt the Goecha La Trek. Due to the extreme altitude, steep terrain, and long distances, it is strictly recommended that trekkers have prior experience completing at least one or two high-altitude Himalayan treks (above 12,000 ft) before taking on this expedition.
Goecha La offers one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas in the world. You will get up-close views of 14 towering Himalayan giants, most notably Mt. Kanchenjunga (the world's third-highest peak), Mt. Pandim, Mt. Kabru (North, South, and Dome), Mt. Kumbhakarna (Jannu), and Mt. Simvo.
No, camping near Samiti Lake is strictly prohibited. To protect the fragile alpine ecosystem and the sacred nature of the lake, the forest department has banned camping on its shores. Trekkers must pitch their tents at the Lamuney campsite and take a short hike to visit the lake.
Currently, trekkers are only permitted to hike up to View Point 1 (4,602 m). Access to View Point 2, View Point 3, and the actual Goecha La Pass has been restricted by the Sikkim Forest Department to protect local wildlife, particularly the breeding grounds of the Snow Leopard and Blue Sheep. However, the sunrise view over Kanchenjunga from View Point 1 is still considered one of the best in the Himalayas!
Yes, all trekkers require permits to enter the Kanchenjunga National Park. You will need to provide passport-sized photographs and a valid Government ID at Yuksom. Foreign nationals require an additional Protected Area Permit (PAP) and Inner Line Permit (ILP). Note: When you book with Altitude Adventure Holidays, our team manages all the necessary permits and paperwork for you.
Yes, because the trek reaches an altitude of over 15,000 feet, the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is significant. The itinerary is designed to help you acclimatize, but it is crucial to stay heavily hydrated, avoid rushing on the trail, and immediately inform your Trek Leader if you feel dizzy or nauseous.
