Annapurna Base Camp Trek — Where You Feel Like You Can Touch the Mountains
There are treks that take you through the Himalayas—and then there are treks that make you feel completely surrounded by them. The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of those rare Himalayan adventures where an eight-thousander feels incredibly close. Standing inside the Annapurna Sanctuary, surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, is an experience that photographs simply cannot capture.
Face-to-Face with the Annapurna Massif, Imagine waking up to some of Nepal’s most spectacular Himalayan giants:
- Annapurna I – 8,091 m
- Machapuchare – 6,993 m
- Hiunchuli – 6,441 m
- Annapurna South
- Other peaks of the Annapurna Massif
The mountains don’t just appear on the horizon—they seem to rise directly around you. And when the first rays of sunlight hit those enormous snow-covered peaks, the experience becomes even more magical. Sunrise and sunset in the Annapurna Sanctuary are moments you’ll remember long after the trek is over.
More Than Just a Trek, The ABC Trek isn’t only about mountains. Along the trail, you’ll encounter:
- Traditional Gurung villages
- Diverse Himalayan landscapes
- Ancient religious traditions and mythology
- Traditional Maruni & Ghatu cultural influences
- Natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda
- Teahouses, cafés and local communities
- Incredible photography opportunities
The journey through Ghandruk offers spectacular views of Hiunchuli, Annapurna South and Machapuchare, while the trail towards Sinuwa brings you deeper into the Annapurna landscape. And then there is Machapuchare—the iconic Fishtail Mountain—which seems to accompany you along much of the journey.

On the 2nd day, our ABC trek begins and you can say that Pokhara is the gateway to the mighty Annapurna region. From Pokhara we will drive to Ghandruk (2012 m) and from there we will trek to Chomrong (2200 m). After breakfast, we will leave Pokhara for Ghandruk which is a small beautiful hamlet in the Annapurna region. It will take around 3 hours drive to reach there. This small village has tea shops everywhere and provides stunning views of the mountains. From Ghandruk our trek begins and the distance travelled is 10 km which will take 6 hours. From Ghandruk, you need to cross the stream – Kyunri Khola by bridge and take a steep trail that ascends for 1 hour to reach Chomrong. The peaks visible from today’s trail are Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, Machapuchare, and Annapurna South. Chomrong is the gateway to the Annapurna sanctuary from where you need to collect permits for the trek. Overnight stay in Chomrong in a homestay.
-
On the 3rd day of our trek, we will trek from Chomrong (2200 m) to Bamboo (2400 m). The distance travelled today is 10 km which will take around 6-7 hours to reach. Wake up with a beautiful sunrise over the 8000er peaks which looks absolutely magical early in the morning. After breakfast we will start our trek with a downhill trail until we reach a hanging bridge. Beneath the hanging bridge, Chomrong Khola flows with its full glory and after crossing the bridge we enter the dense forest. The forest is covered with rhododendrons, oak, beautiful wild blooming pink flowers, and other alpine trees. From the forest, there is a steep uphill trail to the Sinuwa village. The sound of the gushing river Chomrong Khola adds a touch of drama in today’s trail. Finally, Annapurna III comes in sight as we move gradually towards our Bamboo campsite. Bamboo trees are there all around the campsite hence the name given. Night stay at Bamboo in tents.
-
On the 4th day of our trek, we will trek from Bamboo (2400 m) to Deurali (3300 m). The distance travelled today is 9 km which will take around 5-6 hours to reach. Today the trail will be difficult as compared to the previous day. We will begin our trek after breakfast and our first stop will be at Dovan. Dovan offers an unobstructed view of Machapuchare. After Dovan, the trail will be a combination of uphill, downhill, and muddy trail. We will reach a wooden bridge to cross a river and there will be a holy shrine built in the way. From here the trail will be through dense alpine forests, bamboo trees, and ferns. Our next point will be at Hinku which is an overhanging cave whose entrance is blocked. From here, it is a downhill trail for few hours and after crossing a stream we will finally reach our Deurali campsite. Night stay at Deurali in tents.
-
On the 5th day of our trek, we will trek from Deurali (3300 m) to Machapuchare Base Camp (3700 m). The distance travelled today is 4 km which will take 3 hours to reach. Today is the first important day of our trek as we reach MBC and is one of the shorter days. In the beginning we will cross the growling Modi Khola River and from here there will be a rocky trail till Bagar. As we will ascent after crossing the river, we will find sparsely vegetated slopes and will finally reach Machapuchare Base Camp. From MBC, you will get the best views of Mt. Machapuchare and even Annapurna South. Night stay at MBC in a tea house.
-
Finally the most important day of our trek arrives on the 6th day as we will trek from Machapuchare Base Camp (3700 m) to Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m). The distance travelled today is 3 km which will take 3 hours to reach. Wake up with the most majestic sunrise at MBC from where Machapuchare looks like a dream amidst the first rays of the sunlight. The trail will be rocky with an inclined path and there will be chances of finding snow. Today finally you will get an obstructed view of the entire Annapurna Massif. Trust me, though the trail today will be bit rough and difficult, but the magnificent views will absolutely delight you in every possible way and is absolutely worth all the efforts. We will also ascend through the Annapurna glacier today. Finally, when you reach ABC, you will get magnificent views of Annapurna range, Machapuchare, Hiunchuli, Gandharvali, Kangsar Kang, Tare Kang, and Gangapurna range. Night stay at ABC in tents.

On the 7th day of our trek, we will trek from Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m) to Upper Dovan (2520 m). The distance travelled today is 13 km which will take around 6-7 hours. First of all, today marks one of the best sunrises of your lifetime and the memories will remain etched in your heart forever. Wake up before sunrise and capture the first crimson rays of the sun over the Annapurna range. I won’t be wrong if I say that you are actually standing the closest to Annapurna without climbing it. And definitely, this grand Himalayan view should be enjoyed with a hot cup of tea amidst the freezing cold. There will be a complete downhill trail today till we reach upper Dovan. Night stay at Dovan in a homestay.

The distance travelled is 11 km which will take around 6-7 hours to reach Jhinu Danda and from there will take 2 hours to drive to Pokhara. We will take a break at Chomrong and from there will trek towards Jhinu Danda. The natural hot springs of Jhinu Danda is that absolute luxury you need right now to give rest to your body and legs. Dipping into the hot water will completely rejuvenate your soul and body. A car will be waiting for use at Jhinu Danda and after the much need rest we will drive for Pokhara. While beginners with excellent athletic fitness can complete this trek, prior high-altitude trekking experience is strongly advised. The ABC route is a classic "teahouse trek." As you hike from Pokhara to the base camp, you will stay in a mix of traditional teahouses, local homestays, and sometimes structured tents at higher camps. These accommodations offer basic but comfortable beds, blankets, and a warm dining area where you can enjoy hot, freshly prepared meals.
Yes, all foreign trekkers require two permits to enter the region: the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card and the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) permit. If you book a structured package, these permits are generally included and arranged by your trekking guide.
