Mardi Himal Trek is absolutely ideal for those trek lovers who want to explore the Annapurna region by foot but do not have much time like ABC Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek. Mardi Himal Trek is an underrated trek in the Annapurna region that is terribly beautiful and should definitely be explored.
This short and crisp beautiful trek in the Annapurna region will make you fall in love with Nepal and will surely urge you to return back to Nepal again. Mardi Himal is located in the Annapurna Conservation Area. This short 5-day trek begins from Pokhara in Nepal and takes you beneath the mighty Mt Machupuchare or the Fishtail Mountain. This entire 5-day journey is extremely beautiful with spectacular landscapes, majestic views of the Annapurna Massif, Mt Machupuchare, Hiunchuli, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu, lush green forests and hills, dense oak forests, vibrant rhododendrons blooming all around, and snow-capped mountains all around you surrounding with full glory. During this trek, we will also come across some beautiful lakes and breathtaking waterfalls.
The USP of this trek is that the Mardi Himal Base Camp is located just at the base of Mardi Himal and Mt Machupuchare at an altitude of 4500 m, so you can imagine how beautiful this campsite will be. Since this is an offbeat trek, not many people know about this and remains less crowded as compared to the ABC trek or the Annapurna Circuit Trek. This trek is absolutely ideal for beginners as well as seasoned trekkers who want to get a feel of a mini mountaineering experience. Walking through the lush green dense forests, the trail will take you to the upper viewpoint of a mountain.
Overview
Being on the outskirts of the ABC trekking route, this trek will give you the virgin experience of a trek in Nepal with the most magnificent and pristine landscape. Also this trek can serve as a great start-up for the high altitude treks in Nepal as it takes you to an altitude much less than the other treks in Nepal.
So its time to explore this less crowded trail in the Annapurna region of Nepal.
Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
The Mardi Himal Trek is an easy to moderate-level trek that can be done by beginners as well as seasoned trekkers. Previous trekking experience will always be an added advantage. However, one needs to make sure that your fitness level is best in order to complete this trek successfully. Though there are fewer challenges as compared to other treks in Nepal but there will be some terrain which is difficult to walk along with steep ascents and descents in narrow and rugged paths. Since you will be attaining an altitude of 4500 m, there can be chances of AMS so make sure you have experience of being in high altitude. The total distance covered will be 40 km in a span of 5 days hence there will be long walking hours, so you should be physically and mentally prepared for this.

The best time to go for the Mardi Himal Trek is during the spring and autumn season. The spring and autumn seasons in Nepal have the best weather with crystal clear skies and favourable temperatures. During the spring season, the trail is blooming with rhododendrons all over. Whereas the autumn season provides unbeatable views of the high Himalayas. Overall during these 2 seasons, the trekking conditions are ideal, and the terrains are in good condition that will provide a memorable experience to the trekkers. The temperature in the daytime is around 15 degrees Celsius and in the night it falls down to -3 degrees Celsius. So make sure to have the proper gear with you to sustain the temperature in any season you go.
Suitable Age Group: The suitable age group for the Mardi Himal trek is between 9 years and 60 years. There are days in this trek where there is long walking hours hence your fitness level should be at its best. If you are between 9 to 17 years old, you should accompany your parents or guardian on this trek. If you are above 55 years of age, you need to carry a medically fit certificate from a doctor in order to go on this trek.

How to Reach
Via Air: Tribhuvan International Airport is the only international airport located in Kathmandu, Nepal. From Kathmandu, you need to reach Pokhara. There is no airport available in Pokhara but there is a landing field and you need to book an additional flight to reach Pokhara. The popular airline companies that run flights in this route are Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Simrik Air and you need to book the tickets in advance which are quite expensive. The total air distance is 200 km and can be travelled within 30 minutes.
Via Train: There is no railway option available in Nepal and you need to reach Gorakhpur, Raxaul, or Jaynagar, New Jalpaiguri in India. From Gorakhpur, you need to reach Sonauli border, or from Raxaul you can reach the Birgunj border or from Jaynagar you can reach the Panitanki border. From these places, you can book a car or take a bus to Pokhara via Kathmandu.
Via Road: If you are coming from the Gorakhpur side, Pokhara is 275 km away from Gorakhpur and would take around 8 hours to reach. If you are coming from Raxaul, then the distance covered is 259 km and would take around 7 hours to reach Pokhara. If you are coming from Panitanki, you need to reach Kathmandu first which is 457 km and will take 12 hours to reach. From Kathmandu, you need to reach Pokhara which is another 200 km in distance and will take 6.5 hours to reach.

Pick-Up and Drop Time: On Day 1, you should arrive to Pokhara as per your schedule and contact our team. On Day 2, our journey for the Mardi Himal trek will start from Pokhara at 9 am after breakfast. On the last day, we will reach Pokhara by 4 pm however we suggest booking your return journey from 7 pm onwards.
Mobile Network Availability: NCell, the local network is available in the lower altitude areas during the trail and the large villages. You will get network signal as well as mobile data services in these places however the coverage is patchy and not at all reliable in the remote areas. So it is best to inform your family about network issues and the best is to inform them in Pokhara itself.

Itinerary

On the first day, you need to arrive in Pokhara on your own. You can avail different ways to reach Pokhara as per your feasibility. We advise you to reach Pokhara by 4 pm and contact our team. You can also enjoy the boat ride on Phewa Lake and enjoy the stunning sunset from the lake over the mountains surrounding. Pokhara is also a nice place to explore with numerous cafes and local shops. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel.

On the 2nd day our trek begins. Today we will drive from Pokhara to Kande which is 33 km away and is 1 hour drive. From Kande, we will trek to Deurali (2100 m) which is 5.4 km away and will take around 4 hours to reach. Kande is the starting point of the trek and from Kande, we start walking through the dense oak and rhododendron forests and reach Deurali which is a mountain pass. Deurali separates the Annapurna range and the Mardi Himal and Machupuchare. Today the trail to the Deurali campsite is through local Nepali villages where you can take some rest and have some hot tea. While walking to the campsite, do not forget to enjoy the magnificent views of the high snow-capped peaks. Night stay in Deurali in a mountain lodge.

On the 3rd day of our trek, we will trek from Deurali (2100 m) to Rest Camp (2605 m). The distance travelled today is 8 km which will take around 5 hours to reach. Today’s trail is extremely beautiful mostly through high altitude grasslands that ofeers unbeatable views of Mt Machupuchare, Annapurna Range, Dhaulagiri, and Mardi Himal. After crossing the grassland, we will finally reach Rest Camp which is our today’s campsite. The trail through the forest will also offer wildlife spotting of Himalayan Thar, spotted dear, and many more along with rhododendron forests. Overnight stay in a mountain lodge in Rest Camp.

On the 4th day of our trek, we will trek from Rest Camp (2605 m) to High Camp (3550 m). The total distance travelled today is 8.5 km which will take around 6-7 hours to reach. We start our day after early breakfast and our first stop will be at Low Camp which will take around 2 hours with an easy trail. Once you reach Low Camp you will be delighted with the views of Mt Machupuchare. Our next stop is at Badal Danda which is another 1.5 hours away. We will have our lunch here enjoying stunning 360° view views of the high Himalayan mountains. Once we go beyond Badal Danda, we will also have great views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli along with Machupuchare. Now as we will gain altitude, the trail does not have any trees. From here the trail to the High Camp is through high grassland and after 2-3 hours of walking we will finally reach High Camp. High Camp is one of the best campsites of this trek that offers unbeatable views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Mardi Himal. If you are lucky, you might get a glimpse of Daphne – the national bird of Nepal. Enjoy a memorable sunset in this trek. Overnight stay in a teahouse/mountain lodge in High Camp.

Today is the most important day of our trek. We will trek from High Camp (3550 m) to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 m) and return back to High Camp (3550 m). The total distance travelled today is 10 km which will take around 7 to 8 hours to complete. Wake up early in the morning and do not miss the most magical and enchanting sunrise of this trek. When the first ray of sunlight falls on the high snow-capped peaks ahead is nothing short of any fairytale dream. Since it will be a long day, we will start early and move towards the Base Camp to catch a magnificent sunrise over Mt Machupuchare and Mardi Himal. Today the trail will be very steep and tiring but trust me it is worth all the efforts. The splendid and spectacular views of the Annapurna Range, Mardi Himal, Dhaulagiri, and Mt Machupuchare that you will get from the Base Camp are beyond description. Spend some quality time in the Base Camp and engulf the beauty that this place offers. Do not forget to capture the panoramic views of the high mountains. After this we will move back towards the High Camp. Overnight stay in a teahouse/mountain lodge in High Camp.

On the 6th day of our trek, we will trek from High Camp (3550 m) to Siding (1700 m). The distance travelled today is 9 km which will take around 6 hours to reach. Enjoy another beautiful and breathtaking sunrise at High Camp for the last time. After breakfast, we will start our trek to Siding. The trail from High Camp to Siding is very steep so please be very cautious while going downhill. Siding is a remote traditional village brimming with rich Nepali culture and local people are extremely cordial. Overnight stay in Siding at a teahouse.

Today is the last day of our trek. We will trek from Siding (1700 m) to Lumre (1400 m) and from there will drive back to Pokhara (830 m). The distance travelled is 7 km to Lumre which will take around 4 hours to reach. From there we will drive back to Pokhara which will take 2 hours to reach. Today we will stay in Pokhara at our associate hotel. Explore the local shops of the lake side city and collect souvenirs. There are many shops for trekking essentials also. Check out those showroom and plan for your next adventure. Meal of this day is extra payable.
